Magazine Advertisement

Our group decided to take pictures of the main character to put on our magazine advertisement as we thought that because it was an advertisement the band would be an important feature on it. However we have since decided to go with an image that it included on the digipak so that the theme continues throughout.
Here are some of the pictures we took

Also here is a video of our group working and taking the pictures.

Storyboard

Here is the first draft of the storyboard for my group's music video.

Questionnaire

The Script

The Script are an alternative pop/rock band from Dublin, Ireland. They are currently based in London after signing to Song Label Group. The band released their self-entitled debut album in August 2008 and their music has been featured on popular teen programmes such as 90210, The Hills and Waterloo Road.
The target audience quite a wide range. Both men and women like to enjoy The Script's music. However, I feel that the main target are a younger audience as they often appear in the charts and that is mainly followed by a younger audience. Also, I think younger people could relate to the lyrics of the songs as the main theme is love and life.
The Script market themselves through interviews in both magazines and through television. They also use advertising, music videos, their own website, touring, festivals and itunes to market themselves.
When using The Script as inspiration for our own digi-pak, we noticed that they nearly always use certain images such as the houses. Most of the CD covers by them are very arty and are almost collages of images, thrown together to give an insight as to what the CD and songs are about. All of there CD covers are very unique to them, this may be part of their brand identity.

Genre Research- Alternative Rock

Alternative rock is a genre of rock music that has emerged in the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Alternative rock consists of various sub-genres that that have emerged from the independent music scene since the 1980s, such as grunge, Britpop, gothic rock and indie pop.
Many alternative rock artists during the 1980s were cult acts that recorded on independent labels and received their exposure through college radio airplay and word-of-mouth. With the breakthrough of Nirvana and the popularity of the grunge and Britpop movements in the 1990s, alternative rock entered the musical mainstream and many alternative bands became commercially successful. Nowadays, many bands are labelled and alternaive band but many feel that it is now actually a term of describing popular music.

Artists in recent years that are alternative rock include; Paramore, Kids in Glass Houses, The Script and You Me At Six.

Location Report

We chose Ironbridge, Shropshire for our music video. The reason we chose this location is because it is scenic and has so many places we could film. We thought it would be good for our music video because we are choosing to do a narrative and we thought that Ironbridge seemed quite a romantic place due to the amount of scenic views. One of the other reasons we chose the location is because it is local and is an easy place for us to access whenever we wanted, if we we need to get some extra footage for the music video.

DVD cover analysis- All Time Low

All Time Low- Straight to DVD

This DVD was released on May 31 2010 and shows footage of their tour in the fall 2009. The DVD cover shows each member of the band in action and also shows a shot of the huge crowd from above, this is to show just how big the show was and to entice people to buy it to watch what happened and see how good it was. All the shots are in colour and shows energy in each photo. This is so the audience feel as if they are there at the concert. The photos of the band members are as if the audience is looking upon them from front row, this is more appealing to the audience because even if they saw them on tour, the DVD may show things that some of the audience didn't get to see.

DVD cover analysis- Paramore

Paramore- The Final Riot

This is the DVD cover of the tour that Paramore did in 2009. It documents the band's performance from a night in Chicago and the band have described as their "best show ever". The cover shows each member caught in an action shot, this shows the energy of the show and what is expected from the DVD. The images are in black and white with a black background, this may be to set the mood/tone as when people go to a music concert it is dark and again this shows what is expected when you watch. Also all the images are quite strong and striking that the black background make them stand out more. The title is is bright red, this makes it stand out and is also quite significant to the band. The font of the title is the logo of the band so it is recognisable. The title 'The Final Riot' is a spin-off of their album 'riot' which this DVD is a celebration of, because it did so well.

CD cover analysis- The Script

The Script- Science and Faith

This album is The Script's second album, released on 10th September 2010. This cover shows two hands holding; one is male and the other is female. This may be to be show the equality with each of the genders. Also the title 'Science and Faith' are usually quite controversial subjects, this may represent that whatever you believe in, we are all the same and have the same equality. The cover represents everyone in wider society and religion, science or whatever people believe brings them together. It could also represent equal power between men and women. It uses a sepia tone, this could be to reflect the tone of the songs on the album. The cover doesn't have the band's image, again this may be because the band is so recognisable there is no need to.

CD cover analysis- Paramore

Paramore-Riot

This is the CD cover for the Paramore's second album which was released on June 12, 2007. The album was named 'riot' because the band felt the meaning of the word represented what the song and lyrics were about 'a turbulence of emotions'. The cover shows the word riot repeated over and over again in a scribbled font, this is to reflect the meaning of the word 'a wild or turbulent disturbance'. There is no picture of the band, again this may be because the band name is so recognisable there is no need for one. The colours;black, white and orange, used for the cover are ones that are quite relevant to the band as the lead singer is well-known for her fiery red/orange hair and the orange may represent this.

CD cover analysis- Kids In Glass Houses

Kids in Glass Houses-Dirt

This is Kids in Glass Houses' second album 'Dirt'and was released earlier this year March 29, 2010. The denotations show flowers in the shape of the word 'dirt'and a plain background with the recognisable title for the band. The connotations is that the word dirt is written with flowers which is the opposite of dirt. Flowers represent love, romance and happiness. This may reflect the songs and lyrics on the album. The band don't use an image of themselves, this may be because their brand logo is quite recognisable so there is no need for them to,or they wanted an image that would reflect what the album represents instead.

Music Video Analysis-Marina and The Diamonds

Marina and The Diamonds-I Am Not A Robot
Abstract

This video shows different shot of the singer in different kinds of extreme make-up. The most extreme make-up and shot is one when the singer is painted in black glittery paint and also the background is the same. The meaning of the song is that nobody is perfect and we have to embrace who we are, this shows in the video and i think that each other different make-up styles and shot reflect the different sides of her personality, and also it emphasises that nobody is the same. There are no costumes in the video as each shot only shows her face this again maybe to emphasise the lyrics and to get her message across without using voyeuristic shots. In the video there is a shot of her with dimante on her face and the lighting is very bright, this may be her popstar image. Throughout the video it is uses studio lighting. The editing and the transactions to each shot is quite smooth and the shots are similar it easy to go from one shot to the other as most of the shots use windmachines so by using the hair movement to make the transaction smooth.

Music Video Analysis- The Script

The Script-Breakeven
Narrative/Performance

This music is mainly in black and white. At the beginning you can hear a non-diegetic voiceover of his love interest; this could be him replaying in his mind. It has a typical concept of the genre, the band performing but to a live audience. The music video is a narrative and shows the leas singer broken hearted and remembering times with his love interest. It includes flashbacks of their time together, but they are in colour unlike the rest of the music video. This could be to reflects his mood as he is down and upset in the present day and the memories are happy therefore are colourful. He is singing on his own to the camera and also watching videos of the two of them together. There is a longshot in the video where they are holding hands and then slowly let go of eachother, this could signify their relationship ending and that he needs to let go. The performance of the band towards the end is in slow motion. Some of the camera shots are as if they are using their own camera, this is to show the romance between the two of them and to make it more personal and believable. The costumes are casual; jeans and t-shirts, jumper, coat and scarf. The performance shows the genre characteristics that Andrew Goodwin writes about in his theory on music videos. There is a use of camera filters as the video is mostly black and white.

Music Video Analysis- Paramore

Paramore-The Only Exception
Narrative/Performance
This music video is a narrative. It tells the story/lyrics in order of the song. The video is typical of the genre, alternativ rock, and includes a performance from the band. It is a 'Hollywood' narrative because it starts with an equilibrium then there is a disequilibrium and ends in a new equilibrium. The video follows the lead singer as she moves into a different situation with every room/set she enters. In one scene in the video she sits in a church, everyone surrounding her are wearing white but she is wearing black. This could be a reflection of the way she feels about love at that time. Near the end of the video, it shows rooms she has previously been in, but only shows her with her love interest. This shows her realising that she actually does love him and wants to be with him. Throughout the video it shows the lead singer lying on the floor surrounded by love hearts and valentine cards. This reinforces the theme of love and also has an element of voyeuerism. Throughout the video there is mainly natural looking lighting, however the lighting is dimmer in the date and music concert scenes and also the band performace, this may be to set the tone and scene. The video uses a range of different camera shots such as close-ups and over head shots, the over head shot shows the element of voyeurism in the video. Instead of cutting to each scene in editing, it continuously flows and the camera follows the lead singer as she moves from room to room. The costumes are quite plain and casual, mainly just jeans and t-shirts, this may be to relatable to the audience and also may be representive of age.

History of Music Videos

Music videos are an important part of the music industry. They are now primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the same of music records.
In 1965, the first glimpse of the music in motion picture was 'A Hard Day's Night' and The Beatles set the stage for what became music videos.
In 1965, The Beatles filmed 10 black and white short promotional videos for their album releases. This kicked off the new wave of artists promoting through video.
MTV (music television) was the phenomenon that gave so much power and importance to the music video. MTV started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA. The first ever music video was played on MTV was 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by The Buggles. As MTV was broadcasting music 24-hours-a-day, music videos were needed to be produced. Music videos began to play an important role in artist's careers.
MTV has been highly controversial; some saw it as a new fresh era in music, others saw it as an end of true talent, as artists have become more appreciated for their looks rather than their vocal and musical abilities.
Music videos have developed so much since the first one, this may be down to technology and the importance of the due to audience expectations. There are not three main types of music videos; narrative, performance and abstract.

Initial and final ideas

With the choice of either doing a short film or music video, i chose to produce a music video. This is because i personally have much more of an interest in learning more about the music industry rather than film. Once my group was decided we wrote a list of songs and artists we would be interested in doing and picked our top few. After researching the artists we'd chosen, we decided to choose The Script-The Man Who Can't Be Moved. The reason we chose this song was because we all liked it and we thought that the lyrics have a great storyline to it.

The Script- "The Man Who Can't Be Moved"Going Back to the corner where I first saw you
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag I'm not gonna move
Got some words on cardboard, got your picture in my hand
Saying, "If you see this girl can you tell her where I am?"

Some try to hand me money, they don't understand
I'm not broke I'm just a broken hearted man
I know it makes no sense but what else can I do
How can I move on when I'm still in love with you

'cause if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me
And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be
Thinkin maybe you'll come back here to the place that we'd meet
And you'll see me waiting for you on our corner of the street
So I'm not moving, I'm not moving

Policeman says, "Son you can't stay here"
I said, "There's someone I'm waiting for if it's a day, a month, a year"
Gotta stand my ground even if it rains or snows
If she changes her mind this is the first place she will go

'cause If one day you wake up and find that you're missing me
And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I could be
Thinking maybe you'll come back here to the place that we'd meet
And you'll see me waiting for you on our corner of the street
So I'm not moving, I'm not moving,
I'm not moving, I'm not moving

People talk about the guy that's waiting on a girl
There are no holes in his shoes but a big hole in his world

Maybe I'll get famous as the man who can't be moved
Maybe you wont mean to but you'll see me on the news
And you'll come running to the corner
'cause you'll know it's just for you
I'm the man who can't be moved

[Chorus 2x]

Going back to the corner where I first saw you
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag I'm not gonna move
